February 1, 2016 “I know when I'm out on the vest on my Star, the leeward backstay is far out of my reach. Any thoughts about how to hop myself back into the boat faster? I just sit up and extend my legs real fast, But if Hal knows a better way, I'm up to hearing it. Actually, I probably should be talking to Hal... :)”

If you are ducking another boat and it's just a small duck then the main will go out far enough. If you really have to bear off then the main will pin against the backstay and the crew will not be able to bear off enough. Hal just hops up and uncleats the leeward backstay as he would approaching the windward mark.
