We are not familiar with the kind of grommet you describe. The solution used by many sailors to accomplish this is to suspend a block from the same position in the sail as the grommet. The reef line runs through the block and back down to the boom all on the same side of the sail. You can use a block at both leech and luff. Good luck. Let us know if you have additional questions.
